Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the June 13 edition of Rocky 99 and Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com) and WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).
Thanks to our guests this week: “Day Of Rock” show organizer Steve Moore, Ganister drummer Randy Wilson, Naildriver guitarist Scott Botteicher and Spirit Lost drummer Sam Thurau. (Thanks also to Chris, Lori and Keith of The Underground Television for providing the studio for this week’s interview.) We discussed the upcoming “Day Of Rock” Easter Seals benefit concert, taking place on Saturday, June 26, at the Blair-Bedford Dirt Track facility in Bakers Summit (near Roaring Spring in southern Blair County). We featured music from several of the bands performing that day; including Ganister, Johnny Unit, Felix & the Hurricanes, Spirit Lost (and possibly Way Down East, still tentative). Along the way, we introduced new tunes from The House Band, Ruder Than You and Dick & the Deer Gutters. We also updated “Local Music News,” reviewed Sandlot Heroes’ Pretend That We’re Famous CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and featured a 1991 song by Pittsburgh’s Triple X for a “Local Music Flashback.”

The Underground Television has teamed up with a western PA charity interest to present a large two-day charity concert event early next month. The Underground-Rock For Life Music Festival will take place on Friday night and Saturday, July 9-10, at the Iselin Ball Field in Iselin (west of Indiana). Some 19 bands will perform at the event; Friday’s headliners are Ventana, which features members of Mushroomhead. Saturday’s slate includes Buffalo, New York’s As Summer Dies. Other performers include Relapse Records recording artists Hero Destroyed and Mose Giganticus; DRP Records recording groups Gloominous Doom, Ninetail and Throdl; and local and regional names such as Skell, The Clover, Neocracy, Naildriver, Blakkjak, After The Fall and more. Tickets for the entire weekend are $20; proceeds will benefit Rock For Life, which helps out children in western PA suffering from serious or life-threatening illnesses. Tickets can be obtained through The Underground’s website, www.theundergroundtv.com.
The Underground-Rock For Life Music Festival will also mark the debut of a new Altoona-based band featuring some familiar faces. Missing Factor 5 will feature former Dragon Fire guitarist Chris Peters and bassist Eric Shumac, former Choking Faith drummer Joe Richards, and newcomer Adam Seskey – alias Adam 5 – on lead vocals. The group’s sound is described as a blend of hard rock, metal and industrial flavors.
Momentum keeps building for former-Altoona-turned-Baltimore rockers Vs. the Earth, who just issued their major-label debut disc, The Initiative, earlier this month. The group will be opening two shows next weekend for Living Colour. The shows will be next Saturday night at Cancun Cantina in Hanover, Maryland; and next Sunday night at Cancun West in Hagerstown. And according to the group’s bassist, Dawg, there is a strong possibility that Vs. the Earth will tour cross-country with Living Colour over the next six months.
Western PA progressive metal rockers Synesthesia have found their singer. The group, spearheaded by regional rock vet Tony Mollick, has announced that Tim Aymar, the former frontman of Pittsburgh’s Triple X and Control Denied, will be the group’s new vocalist. Synesthesia is currently recording their debut CD, and will be guests on the “Homegrown Rocker” in November.
State College metal rockers Mindspine have revamped their line-up. Guitarists Erik Smakulski and Phil Peterman have left the group, former bassist Spencer Puzak now plays guitar, and former Mia Mafia/Phobos Anamoly bassist Mark Holland takes over Mindspine’s bass position. Mindspine debuted their new line-up at a cancer benefit show in State College this past weekend.
