I'm going to start my adventure looking for bands to do some shows in a bar that at one time was a hotspot but since died off. So here is the scoop. The headline band will get $100 and the door. If you bring 75 to 100 people you get $200 plus the door. You will get the door regardless. So basically if you bring people you get paid better obviously. The rest of the year is open so If your interested give me a call and we can go over the details. You will need to provide your own sound but we could possibly work something out. I'm kinda busy through the day so if i don't answer leave me a message and i'll return your call asap. Thanks, Chad 7174976901

Couple questions...
Where's the club? How many people does it hold? what kind of bands are you looking for?

Where are we talking? Remy's, Midtown Tavern, Metron, The Vault?

The Vault? its now the Hardware Bar. The Metron? It's now a store. Remy's? Closed building. Midtown Tavern? Mike Banks does open mic night every Tuesday.
So, my guess would be none of the above. Hot Spot probably means something different here. And was Remy's ever a 'Hot Spot'?

Interesting... No band in this area that can consistantly bring in 100 people is going to play for $200 and the door when they could probably get a guaranteed $800+ from the numerous places around.
We've got a lot of fans, but they won't travel to bumfuct egypt to see us. It's hard enough to get them to leave downtown and go to Champions.

Maybe it's code? Is someone going to re-open The Spot (it was a spot that had a bar around the kitchen and was hot while griddles were full throttle) and have bands there?
That would be so cool and totally worth the ass raping to play there! $100 to headline? Where do we sign up?!?

$200.00 is Chump-change! If the club, or local dump, doesn't market and promote aggressively, then they've allready shot themselves in the foot. People are usually open to seeing new bands if they know when and where they're playing. Why do you think the hardware bars do so well?...Promote, promote, promote till they're blue in the face. Not just one or two commercial spots on a non-targeted radio station. There should be a local musicians guild or union around here to prevent this type of one-sided crap. I've seen it work in other markets, why not this one?

$100 plus the door. Haa! Good luck with that. Bring your own sound too? Double Haa!
You should check around to see what real clubs are really paying bands before offering crapp like this. Even "flat fee" bands who only bring 75 to 100 people make far more than the door can bring at most other venues.
Let's work the numbers: 100 people = $200 plus door Door = $5.00 ?? x 100 people = $500 Sub total = $700 (Not bad, but we aren't done yet...) Sub total minus sound for 100 people room= $700 - $300 hire a PA= $400 $400 grand total total split between members = $100 ea
100 People drinking at one of our shows tippically tilts the cash draw to a hefty $3000 to $5000+ from Alcohol sales, plus the keep the door in most cases.
Yeah, a club has expenses and overhead to pay out, but so does the band!!
My elongated point... If your club can't afford to pay at least $800 to $1000 PLUS sound, don't expect bands who actually CAN bring 100 or more people into your "Hot Spot" to knock down your door.
If you can't pay that much, find start up bands, no name bands, acoustic acts, or all original death metal bands who all could care less about money. But don't expect 100 people or more.

A guild is geared more towards establishing a fair market value for bands as well as club owners. As well, the key words there were 'local musicians', as in state by state or region by region...etc. Remember, it was only a suggestion and I really haven't thought that far down the road. I'm sure that there is probably a good argument either way.
Food for thought!!

Yep, I don't think there is anything wrong with offering a band $100 or $200 if they are original and starting out - you'll probably get lots of takers. Just don't expect a $100 band to bring you $1000 in sales or show up with PA big enough for your room.
Even with a guarantee against the door, I want MY people at the door collecting money. Too many memories of the door guy at Midtown 'making change' out of the bands take...

Maybe there's a reason why that "hot spot" is no more?

I do know some one was looking to re-open the spot as a bar/club so this could be it~? well that would be a thrilling place.... and by thrilling I mean suck fucking ass.... You guys are WAY over thinking this.... do the math... can you afford to play a show... yes... then shut up and play if you can't... shut up and play at home like the rest of us... main theme... shut up and play... this area needs some musical evolution... it's so tired... all of it... unless I'm playing of course... then that shit is hot... tell your friends... sorry friend

Here's what it comes down to: Either you want to work, or you don't. I keep thinking of the lesson of R.E.M., who took every single show that came their way, even if meant playing for 6 people and no money. Because, when they left, those six people were fans. For me, if it comes to choice between working and not working: I'll take working. If it worked for Messrs. Stipe, Buck, Berry and Mills. It works for me.

Oh jeezus ... The old argument of Music and Money. It's up to the band, not the bar. If you draw big, you get paid big. If you don't, you don't. Originals? Ask the Badlees how much they made. Or Fuel. Or even the Sharks. the area does suck right now for local original music, but that's probably true across the US. Because there was and is too much crappy mainstream music being pushed down kid's throats - MTV and it siblings should be destroyed. (enter argument about videos ruining music here) Those kids have grown up and now Guitar Hero is what they want to go do in Bar's. That makes me wanna puke. Who around here is really playing anything original anyway? I'd love to go see a really original 'original' band.

Odd how different scenes/venues operate... - When we play a rock club, they expect you to bring a following and pay the band by cover or % of ticket sales.....want band to bring the business to them. - When we play a blues room, they pay the band and expect you to entertain THEIR crowd....sure, they want you to bring people but tend to hire bands as entertainment rather than expecting bands to make them money. This isn't ALWAYS the case but seems to be the trend in our experiences. Then there's Baltimore where they don't pay shit regardless and a tip jar is expected! We play mostly originals and are stuck in the middle --- too blues for rock; too rock for blues. Still trying to find a home. But we've been very fortunate to stay busy. CHEESE NATE MYERS & THE ACES www.natemyers.comwww.myspace.com/natemyersandtheaces(PS - We are playing at Malone's tonight, 9/30 - stop out if you can! 6200 Derry Street, Hbg.)
