I would like to give a huge Kudos to Abbey Bar in ABC. They had an unlikely mix of a one man hip hop act, followed by a larger hip hop crew, wrapping it up with an amazing African influenced jam band (no Africans in the band) called Toubab Krewe. Freaking phenomenal talent here. They even jammed with the opening act offering live backup to a jivin' lyricist for a hippie hip hop closing. Way to let the music flow fellas. You can check out the jam band here www.toubabkrewe.com. The lead musician had "homemade" instruments, one which is tuned by sliding zip ties up or down the "neck" of a modified sauce pan. Ingenuity at it's finest.

I can see how they could slide under the "jamband" umbrella, but I personally see them as more of an experimental rock band-
Only because "jamband" has such a negative connotation to it-
Sure, there was lots of Patchouli and spinning skirts last night, but Toubab Krewe appeals to a *very* broad audience- a couple of months ago they played a theater gig and the average age of the crowd was nearly 60 years old- sitting down and listening. Later this week they'll do a handful of workshops with elementary school kids- and then, of course, they'll hit the festivals-
So yeah, they can be filed under "jamband"- but when you boil it all down, they just really fuckin' rock.
Glad you had a good time, Beth.

I'm glad we're all in agreement here. And it's fitting that they would be out educating the youngin's. Truly a creative venture they are on...or experimental as Jersey Mike put it and that's what originality is all about.

Only because "jamband" has such a negative connotation to it- When people don't understand (they are stupid)... it becomes negative.... FTR... I didn't smell any Patchouli...
