While standing in line at Scheetz, I saw a woman pay for gas, a MTO order, sodas and a pack of cigs using an ACCESS card. This was a white woman that was dressed fairly nice too.
I was just wondering, can you purchase anything with an ACCESS card? Is it the store's responsibility to say "hey you can't use that for these purchases" I thought they had a limit set up for only certain purchases with the welfare system payments.
Any of you state workers have insight/knwledge on this issue.
Don't get me wrong. I believe in helping those in time of need, but god damn not a MTO order from Scheetz or cigs.

The ACCESS card is not limited to food stamps. You can also get your other benefits with it. So if you are getting $500 a month because you are disabled, you can you the ACCESS card to purchase things.

Perhaps it would be more tactfull going to the Mac machine and pulling out some cash, instead of flashing the ACCESS card for those types of purchases. I wonder if just like Katrina, the state could provide a summary of what is being bought with the ACCESS card.
I should also mention I've seen the card used on Black Friday to purchase cheap TV's and computers at Walmart.
Maybe it's just me, but god damnit that just doesn't seem right!!!

To me, it doesn't seem right if it is welfare or food stamps. If it is disability, then I have no issue with it. Just one of those things where you need to know more about the person using it.

Totally agree. If it's welfare I think they should have to swipe a bold yellow print ACCESS card. Perhaps those with disabilities can get cards like they have for Domestic Relation payments. They just look like a regular card.

Just one of those things where you need to know more about the person using it. like those fuckers that spring out of their cars and dash into Wal-mart from the Handicapped spots... I'd like to tackle them... then while standing over top of their bleeding bodies tell them that they now have earned that handicapped sticker!
