So I've been gone for a few days, but what I gather from this post is druggies, hippies and drunks need written agreements. Bare in mind it's only a piece of paper. What are you going to do, pull a Judge Judy and spend more to get the few bucks owed.
I'll post the agreement we use sometimes on the next "On My Mind" article. It's nothing fancy but has never failed.
Doing this for 8+ years, we always get our asses kissed for pulling in crowds. (Guarantee +++) In the few shows that did suck, we always got the min. guarantee. Most were just on the word of the venue owner/manager. People trust me (or are afraid of me) and I never had a problem with pay outs. (Good or Bad shows) Except ABC nickle and diming me to death.
Open tabs are bad business for venues and bands. $150.00 bar tab? Hell our last Twisted Tuesday of 06 was nothing near that and I think I bought a drink for half the crowd. Hardware Bar pricing too.

Hmmmm .. we went thru the exact same thing a few weeks back at one of your favorite dive bars .. we posted on here to let other bands know ... along with some other issues ... and here was one of your responses (again) ... sucks to not get anyone in your corner doesn't it .. ? Quite ironic that the junk you posted to us is quite appropriate and applicable to you now ... ;D

What if cover bands had to purchase their own ASCAP and BMI licenses? Somebody needs to let Caroto know that his login was hijacked by Lars Ulrich.

Interesting attitudes all. I have owned a bar, paid musicians, been a musician, and gotten paid which means I've been on both sides of the shitter. I know a nice buzz is usually in order, but drunk only makes YOU and possibly your girlfriend think you sound good. Which IS all that matters. thats why you buy the marshall stack in the first place. Seriously, don't care where, what, or how, .... 145.00 is entirely too little for any respectable band to drink. You guys need to work on this. Someone should be held responsible.
BMI and Ascap charge too much. THeres a third company out there. 50.00 a year.

Post by Fetzer Music Management on Jul 8, 2007 3:22:23 GMT -5
Ok, I actually just read from the top down and WOW! (That may be my only exclusive use of cap locks)
Fetzer Music Management has had several bands play the MVT. And not that I agree with screwing a venue or a band. I do condone self screwing.
Here is what I mean: On occasion we have had our artists play a room and it ends up a total bust. One Time I mean we had to provide sound for ourselves which was no big deal because the band owned it! And the night brought $125 at the door w/ a $5 cover which equates to 25 patrons the night had a Guarantee of $500. The venue was not happy and if I had been the owner I would not have been happy either. So as the Manager I intervened. To stay on good terms with the venue for this band and others of Fetzer Music Management. This is how our situation ended.
Bar tab $57 (covered by venue) Guarantee $500 (Reduced by me to $350) So total $407 w. a $93. difference
I do not think that 25 people drinking $2.50 drafts brought in enough bar profit to make up the $207 difference in the cost of this night. But at least the bar was not out more. And so we both lost. Because of short notice and poor planning.
Now the how, what & whys 1st bands stop being so desperate. This show was booked by the band 1 1/2 weeks prior to the date. That is just not enough time to advertise and promote.
2nd Owners of venues stop being as lazy as most of these bands. I mean some of you want the band to bring all the patrons then bitch when it goes south. Take your portion of the responsibility. Build your base as well!
3rd Owners & Bands need to promote equally within their budgets. Spend $0 get $0 return. Not all Original band nor Cover bands have awesome followings and those that are great will cost you venue owners and some of you owners want the huge crowds but do not want to pay for them well again you get what you pay for. Venues remember the band that makes no or requires no money can not spend money to advertise. And the same goes for you the bands the venue that does not make money will in time not be a venue!
If I was a bar and was gonna give a band a $500 guarantee against the door or whatever the case is. I would do more then put it in the PAMusician. And I sure as shit would not depend on the band to post it on Bar411, HBGonline, or OSHradio.com. I mean there are allot of things venues could do. I mean you now more then anyone who is playing your place at least 3 months out so spend some money on postcards and distribute them. Do radio a little! Ask the bands for a CD of there music and play it in your jukebox! Help them help you! Hell run a coupon in the shopper for 1/2 the cover. Show the bands you are bringing people in to see them either way they are in your venue listening to the band you booked and spending their money! I nor any of my bands would be pissed if a owner said hey this is someone I got to see you for 1/2 the regular cover heck it is $2.50 more then what we would have had and maybe they will become a fan and come to more shows. AH building a following.
Now if I was a Musician damn I would not be lazy about it. I mean it takes more then just knowing the words to a song and being able to both play a instrument and be able to use the phone too even book the show. If your friends can't get out and get some of their friends and etc to come out. Then they are groupie band partiers and will be at a show just because they like drinking with you. So what! get fans that will work for you. People who come to see bands feel connected to either the music or band it is the whole experience. Bands quit staying to yourselves and meet new people and and make new friends on top of what you have and your following will grow. I mean damn if all you hang with is musicians what do you think they are doing on the weekends "they are playing their gig". So work with the venue and they will work for you!
I have booked rooms where the bands get 100% of the door plus a guarantee and I have booked for just the door and on occasion 100% of the door + 25% of the bar there are a million ways to book shows!
But bands you need to get off your ass' and promote yourselves. I have went too shows and seen allot of great bands but some of you play to your buddies and girlfriends.
Ok that was my 2 cents or at least a dollar.

Man......crybaby's!!!!!!! My old band played at MVT a few times.....never had a problem...... first time we played there we got payed more than what we asked for plus they covered the tab......and yes I am a DRINKER!! The next time we were there the crowd wasn't quite as big (Penn State game, I think *L*) but we still got paid what we were promised AND they covered the bar tab...... And did I read it right that the band in question showed up unprepared? Shame....Shame....... I say lucky to get paid at all. And was the band Feedback? From what I've heard they were lucky to get HIRED at all!!!!! Call your mommy get your nuk and shut the hell up!!!!! Have a nice Day!!! ~Pigg
