and of course it is all to help the original artists!!! (if they see any of the money at all) Speaking of not seeing any of the money. I just found a video on Amazon.com that has a band playing one of my songs. I haven't seen a dime from it and in fact I didn't even know they were using the song. I've contacted BMI about it. I can't wait to hear their response.

This thread is so old..but...
I think one of the main problem is that there are not enough people who have crossed over from the venue side to the band side (and vice versa). We had our share of problems at Angelina's, but I felt that I could usually resolve them in a fair manner. In the 5 years I was doing all the entertainment, I think there was only one time (one band) that is got pretty ugly.
I honestly think a lot of that had to do with me being on the entertainment side first (as a DJ), then moving to the management side. Personally, I think if you are a venue spending $2000 a month on entertainment, it is worth spending the extra $500 or so to "hire" someone to manage it all.
I was actually thinking about getting back in to that aspect of the "biz" and running some venues again. Just not sure if I want my free time sucked up again.

Whats the point of a guarantee, if it ain't guaranteed?
If we go to a place with a guarantee, and it's a bad night but good club - we can work something out. If it's a shite gig all around, they better pay up because we aren't coming back anyway.
I think most bands can deal with dropping the pay if the owner/manager is running around like a dick the whole night. This pretty much excludes the entire kamionka dynasty.

If we played a place and they chapped us at the end of the night we just wouldn't play there again. As far as the whole bar tab issue goes, I don't think bands should drink at gigs. Nothings worse than seeing (and hearing) someone who's had a few too many on stage. That might be funny for karaoke, but not for a band. I speak from experience since the band I'm in now has had a few "episodes" like that. Nowadays we simply dock the persons pay if they get drunk (or stoned). And when I say "dock" I mean they get nothing. We average $150.00 to $200.00 per person per night depending on the size of the club so that's gotta hurt.

In my opinion it doesnt matter who is at fault. People who expect to get paid like professionals should act like professionals. I think both parties are acting rather childish and unprofessional. Talking shit on a message board isn't helping either of your causes. Nobody's going to want to play a venue when the staff of the venue talks shit about a band, and no venue is going to take a chance on booking a band when the band members talk shit about another venue. Y'all need to get over yourselves and grow the fuck up.
